If you haven’t used any tadpoles, I think you can avoid the check completely. or is it the illithid dialogue checks ?
Moreover, DC 30 is what is generally considered "impossible" (by PHB standards); 21 is doable by rolling a 20, which is an instant success in BG3, or having at least a +1 modifier in Wisdom.
Some might say, if it isn't the consequences of your actions...
But, if you are dead-set on not having to transform, reloading the check until you get a nat 20 will let you pass.
So, not a bug or a glitch of any sort.
Every tadpole usage (including illithid wisdom) you lose part of your soul, the game tells you it, Withers asks you about this very subject, after Moonrise Towers fight in Act II.
Tadpoles are not necessary, illithid powers aren't really that strong to justify becoming a psychopathic squid if your character ins't somewhat power hungry or "slightly" naive for believe in the Emperor.
The Emperor is a stinker!
I never trusted him, my first time playing was with my husband, and right way I told him, I don't think you should consume these tadpoles :)... but in his defense, he never played table top RPG or have knowledge of Forgotten Realms lore.
No one cares how you look when you stomp them into the ground.
Excuse me?
You play your character however you like, if your character wants to sell his soul for some little power, go for it, as long you have fun nobody give a dime. It won't change the fact that illithids are psychopathic two legged squids.
I play my character however I please, and encourage others to do the same. BG3 is a CRPG and its replayability depends very much on doing different things, and having different characters with different personalities. Fear the consequences? Mods? Idk what are you talking about.
There is nothing "uppity and judgey" in my comment, unlike yours though.
As Wyll would say "That is the spirit" :) have fun!
I wished I could squish the squid with Orpheu's guard, and have Orpheus giving me the quest to free him. :)
