As Tav you are just an unknown blank entity and you only get the same personal quest as every Playable character.
The only issue is if you go with an origin, and then halfway realize you dont really like that character or their story.
You can watch the little video presentation on characters and if something resonates with you go for it.
I would actually have liked to go back in time and do my first playthrough as an origin character going blind into BG3. Hence i would recommend it, at least for people who enjoy and can usually roleplay a variety of characters. If you're more close minded or prefer doing everything your own way in a whim without thoughts of "what would my game dude do here", then just roll random custom Tav
As a word of warning, the Origin characters do not have their lines voiced when you play them, so there is the hazard of playing the game as 'Tav' or ' Dark Urge' and attempting to play as an Origin character and feeling like something is missing.
Imo either dark urge or custom are the best ways to play.
Well there are a lot of companions.
To voice all the choices that the player can make you'd need to record hundreds of new voicelines for all of them. That requires you to pay the actors for significantly more studio time as well as putting a ton more workload on the guys responsible for editing and implementing it into the game.
*the story works best with a Good-aligned tiefling bard or possibly a Neutral githyanki.
Can't see myself playing anything but "good" Dark Urge.
Started the game with a Custom, but quickly lost interest. I liked the design of the Nautiloid and all, but... felt like something was missing.
As Dark Urge the first dialog caught my interest already.
The only reason to play as TAV would be a certain NPC... (I know there is a workaround, but I decided not to use tricks to mess with what is meant to be part of the story), but I am not sure I want to go through the whole game as just any other adventurer.
Would recommend it not to everyone, but certainly to old timers who have played BG1 and 2 and maybe the other Infinity games, too. Way more interesting.
Shadowheart could be interesting. If you like to discover the mysteries of your own past. And characters with a certain... discrepancy. Might be a good choice if Dark Urge is too much.
