The wizard was Elminster another overused and over powered and as time moves on a dull character.

on the side note the creator of forgotten realms Ed Greenwood looks like his flagship character Elminster

His name was something different. I didn't delve into Drizzt lore but in BG Elminster does appear and calls himself Elminster and has his special sprite. That guy didn't iirc and had some different name (maybe Elminster has many names?)

The less you lean on specific FR characters the stronger the story IMO. FR is not really the most interesting world and the characters not the best written. But if he shows up with an option to kill him as is tradition I guess it's fine.

He's an awful character though.
