why isn't shovel compatible with more classes?
I am playing through with 5 levels in Assassin and 7 levels in Champion, with Shadowheart, Karlach and Will. I have Shovel's scroll. I've tried learning it as a wizard and respecing into my character, but it seems that the only thing that he is resummonable by is a wizard that stays a wizard.
Does anybody know why this is? Would/are the developers considering making him available to any or all other classes?

No. You can summon him by any class. I'm using him as a Fihter/Bard on solo run. The trick is taht you need:
1. Take the scroll
2. Respec to Wizard
3. Summon him (you can do it from scroll, you can learn scroll first)
4. Talk to him
5. Move to the next room (wizard's one) and talk to him again. After that you will get ritual spell and you can respec back.

More detailed version:
https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Shovel_(Familiar)
so the spell can be gained by two separate characters.

Update: Shovel is she

from achievement: "Find and summon the quasit Shovel. Or is her name... Fork? Maybe Basket?"

If you want him as a permanent ritual spell, Shovel has to be summoned as a warlock. And the imp will offer to teach you how to summon him. It becomes a ritual spell that is not dependent on a wizard spellslot being dedicated to it, and sticks around even after you change classes.

If you learn the scroll as a wizard, you lose access to showel as soon you abandon the wizard class and you have to keep dedicating a spellslot to have them active.

You will regain the wizardlearned shovel ritual spell if you retake a wizard level.

Eh, you have to learn them as a warlock to keep them as a class independent summon. Dont get the option otherwise.

Cease and desist with the disinformation please!!!

  1. Have at least one level of Wizard, Warlock, or Sorceror

  2. Cast the spell directly from the scroll

  3. Do NOT change Shovel's name or suggest that she stop tearing people apart

  4. DO ask about her former master and her master's book

  5. Talk to the mirror and go through it

  6. Talk to Shovel inside the laboratory

If you did everything right, Shovel will call you a "Spell-♥♥♥♥♥". You will now have the Summon Cheeky Quasit spell permanently unlocked on your COMMONS bar

It's the wrong way to do it. Doesn't put the spell on your commons bar and you can lose it if you respec.

Learning the scroll as a wizard and then casting it from your spellbook costs a spell slot. Using the conversational method available to the major arcane spellcasting classes as I described puts it in your common bar, available for free once per short rest. No-one wants to waste a spell-slot every day (or every combat even) on a relatively weak but amusing summon.

Additionally, your method can only be done as a wizard and is lost if you respec out of wizard.

Ah, I see. You don't know details.
You can learn spell by regular wizard (and it will reqire spell slot) AND talk to Shovel with ANOTHER party member (temporally respeced to Wiz). Such way they BOTH aquire spell. One guy get it as usual cast and one as ritual cast on common tab.
That's why I provided link for detailed description below my post.
Some more disinfo charges?
