Not sure, but I think You won't get the book if you don't have Wyll because He thinks only a true legend can awoke the sleeping Dragon which he considers himself in the beginning but after showing him what his son Wyll sacrificed to save him and Baldur's Gate (deal with Mizora etc), he starts to have a new found respect for his son.
Again, just a hypothesis. Not confirmed.
I have attached a video too for others for reference.
How would your character know where exactly you have to go under the prison if you don't read the book even once?
And if it still allows then it's bad design honestly.
Anyways, items shouldn't just disappear from the inventory whatever the scenario is.
If you know how to get in you can in fact just rush and get the sword as soon as you enter the keep. Before even going to the ceremony.
I do this all the time as I like to have the OP sword on me and use it in the other boss fights .
Naturally this will glitch some dialogues like Wyll will be telling you how we need to speak with his father right away while the Duke is still in prison/ under Gortash control.
But anyway you don’t need the book at all
