Hold Monster Spell
I'm in the Orin fight and trying to use "Hold Monster" on the boss. However I've never used this spell before this point. How long is the duration of the spell? Even though the enemies miss against the person concentrating on the spell, it still ended. After resetting 10+ times to get the 25% hit chance to work, it still ended up being worthless because it ran out of duration or something. How do I ensure the spell doesn't stop working?

When you use any hold spell the victim gets a new save each round even if the duration is a maximum of 10 rounds the spell can end the round following the application.

If you're interested.

By chance, I had 3 of my guys could cast Magic Missile. If you upscale the spell, each level has 1 extra missile - up to about 8 I believe, or 9 with an amulet. This means that her 12 per round buff, can be easily got rid of, and you can then attack with anything else you have.

Haste everyone, and she'll barely get a turn

The trouble is everyone's getting feared. I can't even perform any actions with any of my characters on my latest attempts

an oath of ancients paladin have a fear immunity aura.

Got any Helms or anything that can stop that. I don't remember it as a problem, and only did it yesterday for the second time.

You could also grab a level 11+ Druid or Cleric from camp, have them cast Heroes' Feast and then kick them from the party.

Thanks for the tips I was able to beat the boss. I had to redo gale to include magic missile in his spells, cast hero feast on myself, then used the hold monster scroll with more reloading my save until it landed. Thankfully it actually allowed me to attack while it was under the effect of hold monster. There sure are a lot of specific criteria you have to meet for this to become possible

It's super possible in all sorts of different ways, and with all sorts of different characters/skills/spells.

On one of the attempts I think I somehow bypassed the boss's status once and dealt more than 1 damage to it, but I don't know how. Maybe crits or modifiers from feats can do that?

You need someone with high saving throw DC (difficulty class) to cast Hold Monster so the enemy has a tougher time making a saving throw. Open a character's screen, go to the spellbook section, where the "DC" number needs to be as high as it can be, If DC is 19, Orin needs to roll a 19 or more to save. Orin's Wisdom is 16, which gives her +3 bonus to dice rolls. That means instead of rolling 19, she only needs 16. That still only gives her 25% chance to succeed the save. But if you make the blunder of having a character with only 12 DC cast Hold Monster, then Orin only needs to roll a 9, and that gives her 60% chance to save. This is complicated mechanics, to be sure, but you have to know this kind of thing to win, because it could matter a lot in important moments.
