People like to save Alfira as she is a questgiver in act2 that have a super warlock robe, that otherwise will be unobtainable.
Furthermore it has to be done on every long rest after you meet her until the Durge scene plays. Once had to knock her out 3 times before the scene finally played.
And she turns up in camp if you are in the Underdark.
Why you would assume I think she's a recruitable NPC is beyond me, and I know exactly who she is.
It wasn't just to kill her, and as the other person pointed out, it's technically possible to prevent her death (the event is still unavoidable however).
Her brutal death is an important plot point for the Dark Urge and you, the player, where you finally get a good understanding of your character's predicament and the roleplay possibilities. It's the moment you are supposed to decide what your character feels and what they're going to do about it.
If you don't want her, specifically, to die, you can just meta-game the hell out of it, or simply not play the Dark Urge.
This event was supposed to be impactful.
