Why does charm turn everyone into animals?

I'm new and Really struggling to understand this game, feels like random things keep happening. I used charm and it turned everyone into animals. Why did it do that?

That's one of the fun effects. When you have wild magic you sometimes do things that aren't expected. Not always good but totally random.

Wild mages have unpredictable things happen when they cast spells. That's the core concept of the class.
