How to recreate a custom character in multiplayer?

Is this possible without creating a new save? I'd like to change my character from dragonborn to a gith in my friend's world.

No it isn't. You can use the magic mirror to change almost anything about your character but your race is fixed, sorry

If your party consist of less than four avatars, sure, you can create a new character without a new savegame.

If not, then not.

And no changes on an existing character beyond what the Magic Mirror does.

In multiplayer. One player the host... start the game and invites you. You accept the invite and make new custom character and vola you are in the coop game with custom character.
I would recommended that only 3 players in coop, so you have space for one original character. But if you don´t care original character quest, go for 4... but I personally prefer those adventures that original characters opens in the game. IMHO
