Besides that; the story and world building benefit from a lot of lore that exists outside the game itself, and there’s a lot of combinations of classes, spells, and equipment that keeps gameplay from being one-size fits all.
That said, it definitely has some glaring problems imo. I don’t know if it’s GOTY because I only played one other new game this year, Starfield, between those two, yeah I’d pick BG3 hands down.
There are plenty of others who disliked the game, but actually invested the time to play the game before coming to that opinion, and can therefore articulate actual reasons for disliking it. Their opinion is worth something, whether people agree with it or not. Your opinion lacks even a veil of credibility, in contrast.
Sure, you have the "right" to post your "opinion", but others have the right to dismiss it on the simple basis that it's completely uninformed.
My point is, who cares? Its just a fake award.
Just our of curiosity, what do you think the GOTY should be? Legit question.
The game got my vote for Game of the Year because from all the games I tried: Diablo 4, Zelda, Starfield, etc, BG3 was the game I enjoyed most, spend the most time playing, and still keeps me interested 3 months later.
That is what GOTY means, it was the best game I played , the most fun combat, the most fun gear - compared for example to Diablo 4 boring lackluster gear and only 5 classes to chose from, etc.
And I am sure many more will also vote it as best game for the Same reasons
Also, it really does have to be said that playing less than 2 hours of a game that can easily eat up 200 for a single playthrough, and that evolves over time, is in no way a solid enough foundation on which to judge its overall quality.
The Elden Ring example gets thrown around a lot, and I'm going to echo that sentiment. There aren't enough words in the English language to adequately describe how much I despised that game. I legitimately could not get into it, and could not bring myself to get even a fraction of the way through it. If GOTY were up to me, it would have ranked on par with Postal 4: No Regerts for me, and slightly below massaging my nuts with a rusty brillo pad. That said, I was CLEARLY in the minority on that one, and I wouldn't dream of opining on a game that I hated and couldn't get more than 15 minutes into.
That's not to say BG3 is ideal. Writing can vary from being absolutely great to being awfully bad (I really dislike Karlach and her story, it feels too Marvel-ish for my taste). Evil route is underdeveloped and does not offer very much in exchange for killing off your companions and cutting out content. Performance could be better. There are still a lot of bugs.
But what I like the most about BG3 is how it values your creativity. You can have a lot of fun with it, play around with different builds, manage your inventory, try fun approaches to difficult encounters, try different quest paths. The more creative you are, the more enjoyment you get out of it. Have you seen that video with an Owlbear one-shotting an Act 1 boss by jumping off the ledge and casting Enlarge? The amount of freedom that the game gives you is unprecedent. Also, after 400 hours I still find new things in this game.
Also there are a tons of games on your profile with only 20-50hrs play, so it seems you get bored very quickly. Of the hundreds of games you have played only two got 500 hrs+.................... GTA5 and Factorio.
Meanwhile we look at a title such as Tears of the Kingdom compared to Breath of the Wild, they are very similar, but TOTK revamps the entire power system, removing all the original ones, and adding in an entire building mechanic where you can put together pretty much any two objects. It also made the world like 2.5x bigger as well by including the sky islands and underground areas. There is Final Fantasy, when comparing between the previous one and this one they feel very much different, completely different stories, characters, combat mechanics, exploration mechanics. Spider-man 2, traversal is added onto completely, they added a wingsuit, multiple traversal moves, when it comes to combat they completely changed some mechanics such as the suit powers and powers in general, instead of just being able to play as one spiderman you are now able to switch between two, and the map is like 3x bigger. All these games make improvements, so they are deserving of GOTY. Diablo 4 is in the same boat as Baldurs gate, however, it improves upon what Diablo 3 had, but when comparing the things changed it just isn't a whole lot to be worthy of GOTY.
yes, the game was overhyped. . i would have gotten it anyway though because i liked DOS2. My thought is that people hyped it like crazy to fire up their twitch streams. If i was a streamer, id also pump my next project in advance for the sweet cash inflow.
its kinda sad, that its not the new game jesus, nonetheless its not a bad game, just not as good as promised.
By the way, its still a strong GOTY contender, it doesnt destroy the competetion in any way, but the other good games of this year are just in the same league, none is really a league higher.
