I'm sorry but opportunity attacks make perfect sense if you really think about it. I mean come on your fighting someone and you decide to leave the fight for whatever reason you don't think that the other party isn't going to take another shot at you? try jumping or using misty step as they won't ever provoke an opportunity attack.
Jumping does provoke it, sadly
I thought that this was changed? If not sorry for my miss information than. Glad I keep misty step handy. It always works in a pinch.
5-foot step...
Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can't take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can't take a 5-foot step in the same round that you move any distance. You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.
too bad it's pathfinder....
Try shoving the enemy away before moving.
NOOB!
Getting trump vibes here
You are in the middle of combat within melee range of a enemy with a melee weapon. You keep saying it's just as simple as backing up but in any real fight when you back up you are at a disadvantage. Humans can only back up at a fraction of the speed they move forward which means if an attacker chooses to pursue they have more momentum. If you try to turn around and run they are going to get a free hit as the time it takes for you to turn is enough to strike. If you are in a proper melee or martial arts stance you can make small quick movements in any direction, including backwards but you cannot completely disengage easily as going anything other than those short quick movements will break your stance and make you vastly more vulnerable. In addition you are leaving space for your opponent to take, potentially compromising your teammates position because you just gave up space.
This is a turn based game, which means that the character you are moving out of range of can't take the space you just gave to them advantageously as they cannot act at the same time you do and attacks of opportunities are a compromise that needs to be made to represent that. As a person who has done Kenpo and boxing the way the game does it is 100% better than your suggestion. The only way your idea works is if melee characters you are within range of are given the option to pursue a character retreating out of range as a reaction but you'd probably be here complaining that your character can hardly move because they are constantly under threat by other melee characters. Well guess what that makes sense, they aren't going to just sit there while you back away.
