For me, maybe the strangest choice by the devs is that they give you not one but two druid companions -- both of which you can't actually have in your party until Act 3.

Really, why is Halsin a companion? Was he just a fan favorite from EA? He's got no quests or anything after Act 2. You get another druid NPC. So why Halsin?

They stay in camp and cook for us. 2 heroes feasts and I can long rest after every fight.

Can't say for sure, but I believe part of it is because he was something of a fan favourite and you might not gain him as an ally. I've never had him as an actual party member, but I have had Jaheira. You can also change their classes if you really want.

I do wish the devs would've included a bard as a companion without needing to change another companion's class. Alfira would've been a fun companion.

You hit the nail on the head, he was a fan favorite and they made him a companion because of it. Nothing more to it.

What's even more funny is when druid is your favorite class, so you roll one yourself. And you get to have 3 druids (bul still no bard companion... really Larian?) lol

Have a full druid party, go nuts and make friends with the squirrels in the grove.

On a serious note the game is very flexible (too much so?) since you can change classes and make the party you want to play regardless of lore or backstories.

Alfira could been a great edition.

I think the game design itself is bad when it comes to companions since it doesn't feel like I found them and they were looking after me.

You can encourage Alfira to finish her song, and later invite her to your camp for a victory party (if you side with Tieflings.)

There's even dialogue for her joining.

Astarian isn't meant to join before you recruited other companions and they will have extra dialogues. He is misplaced and shoehorned into the game and could as easy been replacing the bard who walks to the goblin camp.
