Can't free the Gnomes in Moonrise

This is my second playthrough and I am trying to free the Gnomes in Moonrise Tower. Whenever I try to give the gnomes the tool they need, it says they do not have enough gold. Anyone else have this issue and figured out a solution? It didn't happen in my last playthrough.

Did you find the tool though? Maybe the game just doesn't have the proper error message for the missing tool...

Kill the guards and then flip the lever in the guard captain's tower.

This has to do with the trade/barter system. When you give him items it defaults to "Trade" so it's looking to buy/sell.. hence the "not enough gold". At the top of the screen in the middle is a switch for Trade/Barter. Flip that to Barter and you can just give items.

Or you can do what he asks you to and throw it through the bars.

Great guess! You're prolly right.
It never occured to me, since I passed the tool over with a dialogue option without any problems.

I figured it out. I had to throw the Greatclub through the bars. In the last playthough, I had to give it to him. I just wait until he says "RUN" and then fast travel back to Last Light Inn. No guards to deal with.

You can also alternatively go around to the back of the jail cells(there's a cliff you can jump up to from crates you stack or fly etc that leads to the back) you can also break the walls of the gnome(and tiefling if there) cells yourself. You then can lead them out via a boat docked back there as well.

Keep in mind though if you broke the protective barrier in last light inn, they'll basically die though so its not gonna work even if you break them free.
