Cazadors Staff without Astarion
I have an issue getting Cazador's Staff to rescue the inmates in the Szarr Palace .

I decided to kill Astarion at his first approach to bite me .

This seems to brake the staff issue completely. I already red about the issue with the Daylight effect. I avoid daylight in the Cazador fight at all. unequip Blood of Lathander, and so on.

Cazador carrying his staff at the fight . But there seems to be no option to retrieve it if Astarion is dead.

seems legit. the staff revolves around the resolution of Astarion's quest. pretend it just "broke" instead. Or use something like cheat engine and hack it in to your game if you want it.

Ah! Its a Feature not a bug?

Maybe my magician was cross-eyed and his spell "dissolution" hit the staff instead of Cazador! :P

the staff was tied to the spell he was casting, which is for vampires. the only one that could possibly continue the spell is Astarion, NOT you, the player, so yeah, it makes perfect sense that if Astarion is not there to recover the staff, it breaks.

sorry it disappoints you, but it is directly tied to HIS quest. get over it, or cheat it in like I suggested. hearing you whinge about here is laughable to me, and pointless to you.

OP's is not whinging, They are asking a question b/c they wanted to do a thing and could not. There is no need to be rude.

The game is set up so you only get the staff under very specific circumstances, however, if Astarion is there, he breaks it himself in a cutscene. There should be a similar indicator that it's broken if other choices are made. If that's not the case, it makes sense a player would try to find it.

Having said that, why would you unleash 7 k vampire spawn if you killed Astarion?

Since its connected to Astarion and you killed him.. I think its fair you don't get the staff. Though it showing it being destroyed to indicate to the player is fine. I can't help but smirk as people murder the poor guy and wonder why things don't work on his quest.. lul. I mean you killed one of Cazador's victims and now you want to unleash the 7k+ spawns? Moral compass is broken mate. XD I tease, but yes if its a companion related quest and you kill/lost said companion consider yourself locked out of it.

There are some logic gabs for me.

Maybe I'm not reading the notes good enough or miss some, but i have not found any hint that 7k vapmpires are unleashed. only that 7k souls are needed for the ritual...where they are?...i don't know.

on the other hand cazador carries his staff in his hand..under what circumstances it brakes or "vanishes" is unclear to me. I would assume he has it in his inventory.

For A game that puts this much weight on logically correct interactions, the staff mechanic behaviour seems simply broken to me if astarion not drives the event.

Whatever the staff is good for? I don't know. The Inmates just tell me i need it to unlock the cells. If unleashing 7k Vampires is a side effect, its a good reason to not use the staff.

There are many illogical things in this game. In this quest, for example, if Astarion is alive, you have the option to let him complete the ritual, which in itself is illogical as he's a) not a vampire lord and b) didn't make the deal, but you do not have the option the he just bites Cazador to become a vampire lord himself, while not bothering with the obviously dodgy ritual.

Getting back to your issue if the ritual is completed, the 7k souls are sacrificed. The staff is required to open the prison and release the 7k vampire spawn Cazador had been collecting for this purpose. Other than that, it's a nice weapon to have, but not in any way essential.

The inmates are the spawn and they are asking you to release them.

Did you check the coffin when he retreats there?

Did you try using disarming attacks during the fight for him to drop it?

I staked Astarion on my first playthrough and was able to loot/use the staff from the coffin without any issues.
This was right after Patch 1 I believe

Sorry but you shouldn't have killed Astarion. It'll break his quest after all he's already dead and he's the only one that cares about those prisoners.

Yes, nothing.

No, but when I read the tight bounding to Astarion here I would assume fetching the staff like this would change nothing.

That's not correct, This prisoners mentioned that killing the Vampire lord who bitten them could maybe heal the vampirism. So its not even clear that openeing the cells would release vampires.

How do you use cheat engine to just spawn in items?

Sounds like they were using deception ;) I believe it's more likely if you kill the lord, they also die. Not in this game, just in general.

Maybe :) I had my weapon at the ready all the time. :)

I just wanted to add to this, that it makes no sense Astarion breaks the staff. Imagine how useless that staff would be when it comes to hitting enemies? I just had Laezel use Gale's staff to break the rocks containing mithril ore in act 1, for eg. This particular quest has a lot of nonsense in it xD
