To be fair I did both. The only ending I haven't got yet is the Dark Urge ending... which sadly requires a second playthrough.
Orpheus is the only one who can dethrone Vlaakith. She's the reason why the Gith are so violent after being bred as expendable servants for thousands of years. If he becomes Illithid he can't rally anyone towards his cause so that's hardly a good ending since the Lich queen goes unopposed. As for the avatar becoming Illithid... nope not doing that while romancing Lae'Zel, which leaves only Karlach or some other option I'm not aware of.
If you can just get to him in those six rounds, he can teleport to the sub, btw. He doesn't need to run.
And as long as one of your party members is in the sub, you can have Withers resurrect the others, so it's best to fully use the six rounds to free prisoners and search for treasure.
I was disapointed that you can revive your party members after this because i think it's a good place to have permadeath. My avatar didn't make it back to the sub in time so I was prepared for him to have this heroic death since we managed to save almost everyone... then he just washes up on shore with zero consequence lmao.
