Help me choose my race/class for a power hungry character roleplay

As the name says. I am currently a Seldarine Drow Monk who is all about balance and restoring. It is fun, but I also like to do the same quests differently to see how they would go. Therefore I am thinking of a power hungry character who is mostly interested in himself, and preferably a spellcaster since it it so different then a monk.

I don't want to go for a warlock as I don't like the idea that the power is borrowed so to speak. I was thinking a wizard, since they start with no knowledge and are always craving for knowledge. However I keep reading that a sorcerer is more fun. I am also not sure which race would fit a power hungry character the best. Any help would be appreciated!
