The game also usually warns you that something significant is coming up by doing an Autosave right before the trigger. I always do a Quicksave and a ManualSave whenever that shows up.
In any case, since there are so many instances where the results of actions are not known and no chance of choice is available, I consider Save/Restore necessary as there is no live GM to mitigate such events.
Shar fight? Nuked by Darkness by 6 spell casters.
Lorroakan? Nuked by fireballs and myrmidon AoEs.
I could go on, and that's not to say they're impossible or hard, it's just annoying and seldom happens elsewhere in the game.
I have had some success in similar situations by putting the party in Turn Based mode, positioning around the fight area (preferably on High Ground), and then approaching with a character that has the best chance of winning the Initiative (including wearing any Initiative gear I might have). Then, if that character survives, they retreat as best they can to the rest of the party.
Does not always work perfectly, but at least gives me a fighting chance. :)
Lorroakan fight doesn't let you do this, forcing you into position. That's pretty much how I won the Shar fight, yeah.
I managed to kill lorakan in my 6th attempt, but the fight itself is mega-bugged. I pushed him from the platform, which caused him to fall onto an invisible wall in a gap on the lower floor (not taking dmg of course). then he continued to snipe me through the floor. Thank god i could lock the elementals by banishing them and got a lucky crit on him with shadowheart. but he should have died from 2 story fall.
