Help - Double Character Customization Screens

I've been wanting to play BG3 for awhile and finally got it. I want to play on controller since it's just more comfortable for me. I get through the intro and it takes me to a double character customization screen. I don't have a lot of trouble managing it, but it gets obnoxious at naming your character, which is beyond unmanageable with the double screens. I've turned off Steam Input and it just completely disables my controller. I even completely disconnected my mouse and keyboard and it still does it.
Is there a way to fix this at all? I'm using a PDP Xbox controller, if it makes any difference. Any ideas are appreciated.
