Also keep in mind that the sneak attack damage applies automatically if you would qualify for it with a regular attack.
This ^
Even if you would end up with advantage, if there is any disadvantage applying to your roll then Sneak Attack won't work.
Hm...I know that you can't sneak if you're threatened, but does being threatened mean you can't sneak attack at all? That doesn't seem right...but I might just be not understanding what's happening in the game correctly.
I think it’s logical to assume that if you can’t sneak you can’t sneak attack.
Maybe I’m doing something wrong though.
remember, sneak attack at it's most fundamental requires "hiding". IF the enemy can still see you, you can't sneak attack them. advantage/disadvantage all that ♥♥♥♥ is just clouding the issue. you CAN sneak attack while NOT hiding if the enemy isn't looking at you and is surprised (meaning they don't expect to be attacked) but once they're no longer surprised you need to be able to "hide" to be able to sneak attack
ALSO some members of the opposition have "true sight" or the ability to see invisible/hiding things which in turn grants the whole team view of you. You can hide from your target only for someone who has a condition that always sees you to stop you from sneak attacking his teammate. as long as things like a scrying eye are around you'll never be able to sneak attack. so take out the eye first.
As for disadvantage, remember height can be an advantage/disadvantage. If you don't have the right combat feat, meaning not only do you need to be hidden from sight (or surprising) from a foe, but you need to be higher or at least at the same level (unless you have that feat)
I'm pretty sure you can sneak attack if you have an ally within 5-feet as well regardless if you are threatened or not, which has nothing to do with hiding.
Edit: I just pulled out my 5e player's handbook to reference, and it says you need advantage or an ally within 5-feet. You can't hide if you're "threatened" in BG3 which is a Larian-specific rule (it make sense, it's just not something mentioned in the player's handbook), but hiding isn't the only way to get advantage.
I am reminded of this ring however
