A healing focused Cleric.....seems too weak? This feels really off.
Healing spells just don't seem to heal enough to be viable at all....

At level 5 now.......and facing foes that can hit twice for 12 damage....and my healing spell often doesn't even cover one of those strikes......what?

I remember playing a healing cleric in D&D years back......and maybe my memory is playing tricks.....but something feels really off about this....

yes, healing spells are quite weak so we must rely on healing potions.

You're weak.

You can use potions instead cause healing from spells is indeed weak.

Having a Healer in the party was very important in D&D, or at least it once was. Being weak is of no concern if you can make your combatants terrifying undying warriors with your healing skills.

You're not wrong in that feeling. The healing does feel toned down, that said, it is tempered for difficulties sake I think. The hardest mode is called "Tactician" because you're expected to play tactically and not brute force tank + healer + dps like games such as WoW. If you try to brute force your way through the game you are going to suffer. Most encounters are designed to outweigh the players group in terms of damage and action potential. You overcome that by making choices that favor your group. IE: Using terrain and cover to your advantage. Using environmental hazards to your advantage. Luring enemy groups in to tighter spots making it easier to nuke the whole group at once. Silencing enemy casters, or focus firing them down early. Etc, etc, etc.

Life Cleric helps but even then don't expect a Cleric to out heal damage in this game.

my bet is you didn't arrange the spells so that you're using the best healing ones. LVL 6 HEAL gives you +70hp which is pretty insane. Personally I don't think Clerics are that amazing, you can simply buy Superior Healing potions and throw them at each-other when someone is down.

That's the thing, a dedicated healer, at least from what I remember, was much more effective than potions. Potions were nice, but couldn't take the place of a healer.....in this game it feels like that has been inverted.

In traditional D&D there are no "roles" like tank, healer, damage. At least not like what we have in modern RPG. In D&D everyone is expected to be well rounded, to have some form of survivability but also to be able to contribute damage. The saying is "everyone's a damage dealer" and "spell slots are too valuable to dedicate them to just healing". The smart use for heals is to save someone from dying when they've failed most of their Death Saves. The best way you can support your team is still going to be with buffs or debuffs or just outright damage. Likewise, that's why even melee oriented builds are expected to have at least a way to reliably hit flying creatures or creatures that can easily go out of your reach. Whether that's in the form of crowd control or being moderately adequate with a ranged/throwable weapon is up to you. Being able to defend yourself or escape from immediate danger should also be considered when building your characters because sometimes the game throws things at you that completely makes your character useless

That is the strange thing, a Healer.....by their nature....SHOULD be able to out heal damage, at least if they are focused on that type of build.

Cleric is the least played class.

While clerics in 2.5 got so many advantages and in DnD 1 clerics even got the most income.

Without economy taking play you don't have people giving money to the cleric to relief them the burden of jealousy and greed.

D&D are where the terms "Tank" "healer" and such originally came from you know? As some people would create characters focused on certain roles. Yes, there were players who made more jack of all trades, but in others people created characters that fit together to be more than the sum of their parts, that was part of the fun. A cleric with a pure focus on healing was quite viable and useful, they would often have a shield and mace or such, but that was just a last ditch defensive measure.
