If you really want to romance Gale it's borderline impossible to miss
If you wish to romance Gale the requirements are that you,
1. Have a high approval rating with Gale, which isn't hard to get if you're a good aligned player, but if you're not as long as you show intelligence, magical knowledge, and an interest in art that should be enough. Maybe keep him back in camp if you gotta make a really violent choice.
2. Give him magical objects to consume whenever he asks. That will progress his personal quest.
3. During the weave scene let him teach you magic, then say "it's a perfect night for intimacy," and then in the next dialogue choice picture yourself kissing him. It won't lead to anything beyond that, but he'll leave flustered.
You can have a romance going with someone else in Act 1, but in Act 2 he'll make you choose after your romantic stargazing scene where he confesses he loves you.
Gale is a very buggy companion. You can absolutely lose your romance with him even when you're trying. The issue is that Wyll and Karlach are also good aligned characters, so you'll gain approval with them at the same rate as Gale, meaning they'll all be competing for your attention which equals overlapping romance scenes.
In one playthrough I got Wyll's dancing scene instead of Gale's stargazing scene, and I didn't realize it until I was almost done with Act 2 and by then it was too late, I had to go back to that moment. I also had Karlach try to jump into my bed. Watch out for that and make sure you're getting his scene because if you miss it in Act 2, your budding romance is dead in the water in Act 3.
For less bugs, spend at least 1 night in Moonrise Tower before the Gauntlet of Shar.
There's also another weird bug with Gale where your relationship status with him can reset in Act 3, but I don't know what triggers that as I didn't come across it in my playthrough, just heard about it on the forums.
A good way to tell if he's into you during the start of Act 2 is is when you get to the Shadowlands, he'll have a "!" sign above his head and say he's into you even in a place as unsettling as the Shadowlands. That's how you'll know you're on the track for the romantic stargazing scene later in Act 2. So if you didn't see that after your first fight in the Shadowlands on your way to Last Light Inn, he's not feeling romantic toward you, hope that helps.
Ahh, I see! I have high approval with him and gave him magical artifacts when he asked, he only didn't offer to teach me the weave at the party. I'll have to try and reload a save from before and get his approval up - thank you!
Karlach is interestingly enough, the outlier when it comes to being okay for Gale. I tested this quite extensively personally as I had a goal of having the most romances going at any given time. The upper limit is 4 in Act 1. Lae'zel, Astarion, Karlach, Shadowheart. In Act 2, things come to a head, and Wyll then joins the fray very briefly in Act 2 putting the upper limit at 5. If ANY of the above romances are in an active state in Act 2, Gale will NOT be romance capable. With how late Halsin comes into play if at all, you'll likely already have committed to someone, and you'll know usually, relatively quickly if they are okay with sharing. Meaning the most ACTIVE romances you can have at any given time is capped at 2. Halsin and someone - the only two that have agreed to my testing base has been Karlach, and Shadowheart. Lae'zel is committed, body and soul. Astarion's got his reasons, but I didn't test Halsin + Astarion, and I've yet to do Wyll, or Wyll + Halsin. Though if their personalities speak to any potential results... I'd wager Wyll is a nope, and Astarion equally so, for his backstory related reasons. I've also yet to do Minthara, but I'd wager she is much like Lae'zel.
With the recent update, Gale friend zones you HARD, where as previously, you would just sit and gaze at the stars with a friend, compared to committing to him in the scene related for Act 2.
As a byproduct, Gale has now become a near exclusive romance option you have to dedicate yourself too. All to be his rebound.
Ahh, gotcha! I didn't accept anyone else's invitations but I'm assuming my approval wasn't high enough. I remember it being high, but he was off my party for the most part so it must have been below my actual party members'. Thank you for all of the notes about possible romance options as well!
Thank you all for responding! It sounds like I'll have to redo a few hours and reload, hopefully being able to bump up Gale's approval a bit! If anyone has a clue of around how high it should be (I believe his approval is around 41 right now? According to his profile) to get the weave scene that would be very helpful.
Im playing strategically on Tactcian mode and I think Ive only slept 2 or 3 times in Act 1. So by the moment of the big party Gale "rejected" me because we "didnt have enought intimicy" (approvall of 80 or 90++ btw IIRC)
Now in Act II I unlocked a platonic scene with him - staring at the stars and talinkg about death - and I think this is it.
Hopefully youtube will satisfy my imagination zzzzzzzz
