How do potions of mind reading work?

Will they show up as a dialogue option like a scroll of detect thoughts, or do I need to consume them before starting the discussion?

Honestly it seems like you just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ get it naturally I don't really know what causes it. It's not really clear

If I keep the potions in my inventory (not in my backpack) I find I will get the option to use it during dialog options. The potions are pretty common and you can craft them as well.

you need to consume them to get detect thought, it's concentration based though, so using another spell that use concentration (speak with dead, etc) will overwrite it and you need to drink it again

The potion variant of Detect thoughts doesn't take concentration and lasts until Long rest. So if you like to have it, just stock on the potions and drink one as part of your balanced breakfast.
