Eh, the portal actually isn't a big problem plot-wise really. There's that one spellcaster (whose name I can't recall atm) who teaches you how to get to the House of Hope (which is in Avernus). I just assumed the party either remembered how to get there if you did the associated questline, or learned how to get there by asking around and finding out anyways between cutscenes.

Just looked it up, the spellcasters name is Helsik.
