2 Pally levels for Smites, 5 PotB Warlock levels for a 3rd attack per action and charisma as your only stat are good choices for a melee bard. Conversely, Bard is good choice if you want add some martial prowess to another full caster, since you don't lose any spell slots.
I tried regular bard but it felt so weak to enemy damage, Laz and SH really cannot tank and it is better hide SH somewhere to not lose conc checks instead of exposing her in frontlines.
I played a Fighter 2 / Bard 10. With action surge bard becomes even better. Being able to have an extra action instead of an extra attack makes Bard more flexible than people who focus only on extra attack.
I just hide everybody and open up with "tank" so that others are out of sight - I guess there will be cases when you cannot do that. I just found out hard way that when You open with your sneak attackers/casters they will be killed, so i sneak with my tank, draw aggro and join with others after some enemy actions.
Before i just tried move with the group and yes AI aggrod weakest members on sight. so i place them out of sight. But for that i need a tank to draw aggro and no existing companion is suitable for it
