I also like Gale but in my opinion his story isn't as interesting to me.
Question are you trying to get rid of one of these companions somehow, or will they still be in your camp?
Laezel is easier as a companion as she just smashes enemies with a giant sword while I find Gale more situational as far as combat companion goes
Gale is opposite for me--I like him more in Act I, but his story is far-fetched (even for a DnD game) and gets cheesy. He was fun to have around for conversations, but I founnd myself enjoying the banter between companions like Shadowheart, Lae'zel, and Wyll more than Gale. He got annoying fairly quickly and I eventually just left him at camp.
Obviously, these are just my opinions and you should decide for yourself. Either way, I hope you're enjoying the game!
Agreed about Gale, at level 12 I still only use simple things like Magic Missile or Fireball, most of his interesting spells don't work often enough to be useful in my experience. Laezel as a Battlemaster Fighter pretty much dominates the battlefield.
If you are talking about party wise/roleplaying, eh it is up to your preference. You can beat the whole game with one character as long as you cheese it well enough.
