1 - You and your players just didn't know how to play Monks.
2 - Your campaigns weren't adequate for Monks.
3 - BG3's campaign is especially good for Monks.
4 - 5e is especially good for Monks.
5 - The fact that it's a digital adaptation of DnD, with some mechanics removed (out of necessity), means the things that made Monks bad were also removed.
Tavern brawler and so much equipment.
Probably the biggest buff they get is no alignment, it was this that made monks hard to play in all previous DnD games.
A: crying "Their punching doesn't suck for too long!... because I took tavern brawler feat to make punching suck less! therefore monk punching not suck!"
B: crying "Their AC is NOT too slow growing they will totally have 20/20 Dex/wis instantly! (pay no attention to me screaming you should take feats instead of stats)" or bragging about all the magic items or even multiclassing they did to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ their monk's AC... and treat that as the monk itself being good AC.
C: acting like short rest recharge ki point spending is on par with REAL spells. "But you can dodge as a bonus action every turn!" "That costs ki points idiot" "...but you get ki back on a short rest. therefore infinity ki points" "I have. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Four of them at this level!"
and so on. You can have a good time with a monk if you go in knowing it can have issues, but if you go in falling for people doing the usual idiocy of treating magical steroids and mutliclassing as "Therefore, this single class is overpowered" they do for basically anything that can hit a goblin with a club, you are gonna suffer from a lot of letdown.
One dnd has sadly gutted the monk despite their word on buffing martials
The demons could use mind control. Tell people to kill their own.
There were spells who protected who cleric had.
At highest level having the entire party simply die by going to sleep is why monk had wisdom.
In this game you won't reach higher than 12 that Dexterity is pumped and strength is pumped.
Items adapted for monks make the lack or classical armors a sidegrade and not a downgrade.
Tavern brawler make the lack or classical weapons a sidegrade and not a downgrade.
EDIT: And I thought wrong, as per above.
