Roll a fighter. He fights.

It doesn't really matter, just play whatever is most interesting to you.

If you must have a "beginner" character, play a Fighter and choose the Champion subclass at level three.
Maybe for a beginner, fun classes are what leaves a lasting impression & that's important imo.

I would recommend Warlock (for an Eldritch Blast build), Sorcerer, Barbarian, Fighter, Tempest Cleric. I'm actually playing these classes right now.

Have fun.. I'd wanna talk about multi-classing but that's a wholeee 'nother topic on its own, but really really fun. Research into it if you get a chance

The D&D 5e system has almost nothing in common with the D:OS ruleset. You'd be in a better place to tackle this game if you had never played D:OS and only played D&D. So yeah, maybe a Fighter or Barbarian to quickly learn the rules. Or pick a Wizard for something at least slightly similar to what you're used to in terms of creating/abusing surfaces (pretty much the only game mechanic that's similar between the two games)

Any class, all classes are OP in this game.

Paladin/Warlock

Fighter. It's simple, easy to get into and is quite powerful, scaling well into late game(My main guy, a fighter, is pretty much a 2H war machine that can solo pretty much everything).

You get some pretty nice passives like Adrenaline Surge at level 2(Recoups after a short or long rest) and 2x main attacks at L4. If you have a decent 2h you'll deal around 100+ damage easy at this level per turn.

Barbarian berserker is basically a braindead leveling path. You dont get to pick anything beside one or two things i think and the way you approach combat is straight forward. Just smash everything and use rage if you want. For feats go with improved ability and put 2 points in strength to reach 18 and for the second one use great weapon master. Use 2 handed weapons and smash everyting. Use whatever ranged weapon youre proficient with. No spells tho if im not mistaken. Really easy and strong

Berserker barbarian. Take Great weapon master at level 4 and just swing recklessly. All. The. Time. After that, eat your wheaties every morning and increase Strength at levels 8 and 12.

Roll a bard, go for high chr and social your way to winning, if that fails let Laez'el destroy all your enemies.

Keep in mind that your first available companions are a cleric, a rogue, a wizard, and a fighter. You will get to use 3 of them at any time. So if you pick one of those classes, you are kind of just replacing one of your own potential companions.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's something that isn't obvious when you are deciding which class you want to play as.

(It is possible, a little later on, to respec your companions.)

Berserker barbarian or champion fighter

Both have straightforward path so you don’t never to make big build decisions , both are hard hitters and very straightforward fight style- get a big sword and bash people .

And both are probably the strongest pure classes that you don’t need to multiclass to make them work well unlike say Rogue or ranger where you kinda have to multiclass them as they suck on their own past lvl 5

Started as fighter its quite solid all around

My own personal default preference is to take Shadowheart (cleric), Lae'zel (fighter), and Gale (wizard) with me. Because of that, I like to take either "urchin" or "charlatan" as my background, giving me "slight of hand" proficiency to replace having a rogue. Then I take whatever class I'm interested in for that playthrough -- warlock, bard, monk, whatever.

But if I want to play as a wizard, let's say, then I assume Gale will not be spending much time out of camp, and then I need to think about whether to try to replace Astarion's skills or just take him along.

A two-fighter party is pretty strong, though, so taking a fighter (especially one that can handle the "slight of hand" needs) is also good.

Unless you don't care a bout failing a lot of speech checks you have only one companion at your disposal that has high CHA, Wyll, who is a Warlock. That means you are highly restricted in what you can do unless you play a CHA based MC yourself.

Therefore the best classes to consider (assuming you don't want to fail too many speech persuasion/intimidation/deception checks and you want to lead your party yourself) are:

* Bard (this is considered very strong overall in BG3)
* Warlock
* Sorcerer
* Paladin

or multi-class variations of those. Two that are considered very strong by experts are:

1. Paladin/Bard (for the smites)
2. Sorlock (usually Warlock 2/Sorcerer 10 for the upgraded Eldritch Blast cantrip)
