If you must have a "beginner" character, play a Fighter and choose the Champion subclass at level three.
I would recommend Warlock (for an Eldritch Blast build), Sorcerer, Barbarian, Fighter, Tempest Cleric. I'm actually playing these classes right now.
Have fun.. I'd wanna talk about multi-classing but that's a wholeee 'nother topic on its own, but really really fun. Research into it if you get a chance
You get some pretty nice passives like Adrenaline Surge at level 2(Recoups after a short or long rest) and 2x main attacks at L4. If you have a decent 2h you'll deal around 100+ damage easy at this level per turn.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's something that isn't obvious when you are deciding which class you want to play as.
(It is possible, a little later on, to respec your companions.)
Both have straightforward path so you don’t never to make big build decisions , both are hard hitters and very straightforward fight style- get a big sword and bash people .
And both are probably the strongest pure classes that you don’t need to multiclass to make them work well unlike say Rogue or ranger where you kinda have to multiclass them as they suck on their own past lvl 5
But if I want to play as a wizard, let's say, then I assume Gale will not be spending much time out of camp, and then I need to think about whether to try to replace Astarion's skills or just take him along.
A two-fighter party is pretty strong, though, so taking a fighter (especially one that can handle the "slight of hand" needs) is also good.
Therefore the best classes to consider (assuming you don't want to fail too many speech persuasion/intimidation/deception checks and you want to lead your party yourself) are:
* Bard (this is considered very strong overall in BG3)
* Warlock
* Sorcerer
* Paladin
or multi-class variations of those. Two that are considered very strong by experts are:
1. Paladin/Bard (for the smites)
2. Sorlock (usually Warlock 2/Sorcerer 10 for the upgraded Eldritch Blast cantrip)
