Yet it does seem plausible that they would turn up under the control of the Elder Brain since they should not longer have the protection of "the artefact"
As for stupidity I mean it to the DOS2, still all characters have a mission from their gods and while they left you forever, they just erased from the game, but what about their mission? Why they lost all motivation just because I did not let Red Prince ♥♥♥♥ his lizard wife?
Same here, if Wyll left me, why I cannot find his corpse somewhere further in the game or so. It is so dumb to just erase character at all without any notice of his future fate.
To be fair, D:OS2 companionions weren't erased. They died as part of the plot, namely at the end of Act 1.
Why would they kill off the BG3 companions, if they aren't in your party? There's no need for it. If anything, you could imagine them giving into their tadpole, become illithid and you fight them as regular named "Mindflayer" NPCs late game, indistinquishable to from other mindflayers.
Or they simply are doing their own thing off-screen.
