Question about Fireball spell in BG3?
I seem to be having almost no success with old classic Fireball. I'm used to 1e rules where it's 1d6xlevel and half on save but more often than not it *seems* like it's all or nothing?
Is this a 5e thing? a BG3 thing? or a bad run of luck thing?

So I would not be surprised if enemies did the usual "It isn't cheating! it is lore friendly!" to spam that to ♥♥♥♥ you over, or just outright bugs.

There's this too. High level rogues, monks, and rangers get an ability called evasion which allows them to negate all damage on a successful Dex save. Then there are plenty of creatures in the game (devils and tieflings especially) that have either fire resistance or immunity. You can always right click and examine creatures to see what their resistances and immunities are.

In D&D 5e, Fireball cast as a 3rd level spell does 8d6 damage. It can be upcast as a higher level spell, gaining an additional 1d6 damage for each level slot used above 3rd (eg 9d6 at 4th, 10d6 at 5, etc).

In other words, it's not tied to the level of the caster anymore. It's tied to the level of the spell slot used now.

Fire resistance? Fireball has been dealing massive dmg for me.

If by "all or nothing" you mean big damage or zero damage.

half damage on save cliches are supposed to be a thing, but against dex saves in particular there is a class ability for a few things like rogue that means no half damage.

So I would not be surprised if enemies did the usual "It isn't cheating! it is lore friendly!" to spam that kind of trait to ♥♥♥♥ you over, or just outright bugs. (after all, taking half damage with fire resistance is still taking damage)

You have to yell, "FIREBALL!" as you cast it or it deals less damage.
