It's hard to be a straight man in this game. When you see Shadowheart immediately fall in love, you know she is the right girl, but the game doesn't allow you to have a romantic relationship with her at first, she is a difficult girl to win over.
So throughout the game you have to dodge Astarion and Wyll's homosexual advances, (never praise Wyll's dancing) you need to be careful, walk on eggshells, when talking to Halsin and Gale because they can interpret your friendship as a " friendship".
Then you need to find a way to dump Lae'zel without offending his nose, Karlach would have a chance, but I know I would end up killed by Snu Snu.
And then you think: I still have my guardian, I can have a romance with her, a beautiful woman that took me 3 hours to create in character creation, and then suddenly the guardian turns into Davy Jones wanting to stick his tentacles " in you.
Then you wake up from your desperate nightmare and go to Shadowheart begging to be saved from this endless nightmare, but she says she is sorry but Lady Shar does not allow a relationship with her.
Serious??? After everything we've been through together, you tell me that your goddess doesn't allow our relationship to continue? I should have left Nightsong alive! She is a beautiful woman and maybe she wants to love me. And that's exactly what I'm going to do!
I load, stop Shadowheart from killing Nightsong and then discover that she is dating Ketheric Thorm's daughter.
I give up looking for a healthy relationship, maybe I will find comfort with some woman in the brothels of Baldur's Gate.
That drow woman looks very attractive maybe that will satisfy my character's hetero desire.
Attractive Drow woman says: I will play with you only if you allow my brother to play along too.
In the end you end up understanding why Absolute wants to destroy the world.

It wasn't because of video games, he already had latent homosexuality and let it show when he showed interest in dressing his characters in feminine clothes and liked to act like a woman. I've never had Astarion come on to my character. He wants to suck my character's blood (everyone's blood really), but AFAIK he's asexual and doesn't get anything out of sex because he's undead. If you let him suck your character's blood it doesn't even start the relationship path with you but it does unlock his bite attack.

As for the other companions, the trigger for romance is their approval of the PC. They hit on you when their approval threshold passes good and again when it maxes out if you haven't turned them down already or if you aren't in a relationship.

If you're good, Gale, Wyll and Halsin are probably the easiest companions to max relationship with. Halsin's probably too easy to max relationship with, although after rescuing him, saving the grove and ending the shadowcurse you've fulfilled his every desire.

Shadowheart is probably one of the hardest since she thinks she's a Sharran but likes Selunite actions and her approval is a weird mishmash of the two philosophies. Basically, insult Selune every chance you have but rescue animals and help people in need and she'll like you. I think Karlach might be bugged, because her approval meter seems to increase a lot slower than the other companions. In particular, if you don't have her in your party when you rescue the grove, it takes a really long time to build up her approval.
