Best Race for Bard?

I have been trying to pick my race for a new bard run, but I am having some difficulty. Wood Elf seems the best because of bonus movement, free perception and free stealth, but Half Elf is nice because I pick up the shield and can get either the movement bonus or a free cantrip. Halfling luck is always a win getting to reroll natural 1s.

I also looked at Dark Elf, Dwarves and variants, Gnomes and variants as well as Human and even Githyanki. Anyway, hopeully you folks can help me think of things I may have missed. I do plan on being the rogue for the group as a bard so I am thinking Charlatan background to pick up free Sleight of Hand.

I picked Drow for my Bard. This is intentionally duplicating the hand crossbow proficiency, so that I could swap the classes of two party members at level 8 or so to have 2 members be hand crossbow capable.

Finished the game yesterday with a Drow Bard but I talked my way trhough a lot so my next play will be a different class. I want to fight the Goblins not beeing praised by them lol. But Bard is my fist choice in every game I can chose one. So have fun and enjoy the game its the best I played in 30 years.

My bard is always the same race, the Superior race: human.

All the racial bonuses are trivial and doesn’t really make a difference in the game.

The racial bonuses are indeed trivial. That's why my last bard was a half-Orc. Who says Orcs can't play the lute ?

Some 95% of all character variations I ordinarily play are just representations of me. Factoring the occasional gender bend if I choose to roll a female. I look at the racial benefits and think about my life and progression and invariably.

Make human is ultimately my main character base. Can’t argue against a basic truth 😁

Yep same with me I make my main always a male human with beard and pony tail/ long hair just like me.

I go even one up and try to chose a class that I can associate with in real life, like I know to play guitar , have a college degree and workout, I can also shoot fairly well and love camping so bard is the closest class to my real self. If bard wasn’t available then ranger/ rogue would be the next closest thing lol.

I like to RP as myself and explore the world as if I got teleported in this magic universe for real lol

Race doesnt matter much at all for gameplay purposes, really. Just pick the one you like for RP reasons.

Half-elf or human can give you the shield proficiency for a sword college bard
