Questions about starting a multiplayer run
Im setting up a weekly recurring session for stream viewers to join in. I have a few questions if anyone can help.

1.) What difference does it make if the other players join when I create vs. if they join after i create the session? Example. I am going to require everyone to be an origin character. Since different people will be playing the characters each week, theoretically, should i create the session then have them join, rather than creating the actual session with me?

2.) Since we will all be origin characters... how do character choices matter? For example, as the party leader, what if i say something to lazael that would typiically make her leave the party, does that still happen? The character and player just vanishes from the game? Or does it give warnings with dialogue options sine its a human playing it (aka, lazael will leave the party if you choose this option).

3.) If anyone has done a multiplayer game already, any things you wish you knew before starting? in early access for example i remember if someone made their own character they were forever stuck in your party. Is it still like that?

Only one I can answer here confidently is that you can now send away player-made characters and they go into a magical withers cabinet where you can get them back later. Thus you are no longer permanently stuck with custom avatars.

Oh, and each player seems to act in dialogue totally by themselves or at most with a follower. So if you have 4 players, each players dialogue is going to be singular, and basically ignore the entire rest of the party, and thus I don't likely believe you can take any actions that will force away the origin characters.

Edit: I'm keeping in the total lack of confidence in that last statement because it's an absolute guess based on my limited multiplayer experience.

Yea the multiplayer aspect is so complicated, but i can see why. At least there are some role play ways to account for it. If someone chooses something that pits them against the party, I suppose they can rejoin as another character and just live with the results. I hate reloading just because someone doesn't like the outcome of their choice. I like the choice to matter.

Anywho thanks for the response!

  1. Players can only play as Origin characters if they join a new game from the multiplayer lobby. Players joining a campaign in progress can ONLY use custom characters.

  2. Player controlled characters can't talk to each other, even if they're origin characters. Also, player controlled origin characters will never leave the party. This means that, for instance, If a player is controlling Karlach, raiding the Grove will not cause her to leave

  3. Custom characters can be dismissed back to camp if their player can't make a session, but if they step away completely and you try to get someone else to take their place, that person will be forced to use the old character.

New question: Can two players playing origin characters enter a romance assuming the same pre requisites are met as if they were an npc?

Edit i think what isaac said answered that. Wow that really sucks.

They can't talk to each other, so unfortunately not

This is so confusing. If they cant talk to each other how do origin character questlines unfold? Like ... *spoilers ahead* when shadowheart is faced with killing nightsong... doess she just talk out loud but te party leader cant interact wit hher?" (i wouldnt expect to be able to influence another player by rolling dice but i figured youd be able to talk to them)

Instead of trying to persuade Shadowheart it becomes a choice that is entirely up to the player controlling Shadowheart.

Edit: So as for how the origin quests play out, they play out from a first person perspective with the player controlling that origin character making the important choices to make that affect their questline.

That makes sense and i totally think thats how it should be, as a human player should be able to decide for their own character. I guess i just expected to be able to have lines with them even if it had no effect. Like no shadowheart dont do this! (as the party leade) even if it had zero effect. im a bit letdown that isnt the case.
