What's with the lava Elemental

Is there something to do is there something to do with the lava Elemental story-wise or Quest wise or is he just there as a threat running around? I don't think it's at any other place but just in case I'm going to precise it at the forge in the underdark.

Lava Elemental is not a waste of time. There are Inspiration points related to killing it IN the Lava. It's also used as a reference point for a potential conversation point in Act 2. Killing it also stops the lava from erupting, allowing easier traversal of the area not in turn based mode, and if you follow its path around, you'll notice it moves near loot, frequently. Notably a key for a nearby chest, a Halberd of questionable quality, and a bit junk loot.

The Lava Elemental is ultimately an unspoken challenge to players who would attempt it. It has a purpose, even if that purpose does not align with your goals. Take it, or don't. You gain nothing of extreme value, and you lose nothing of extreme value by choosing. So, choose.

Gives inspiration if you have outlander background, nearby have a Locket that gives you a sidequest for Act 3

The Lava Elemental walks around an adamantine chest that contains the Sentient Amulet, which gives you a quest. Perhaps the Lava Elemental being neutral was the entity in the necklace’s or its creator’s idea of a joke, since many people will try to fight the Elemental even though there’s no real benefit to doing so? The amulet tells you you were meant to find it and help it, so maybe that’s why the elemental is neutral instead of aggressive towards the player.

We feel pity for creatures that are not agressive to us, so we decided not to kill him. Why kill him? Just because he doesn't look like us?)
