Which character’s best for romance in the end?
I’m in Act 2 now and have to settle for one lover. I wonder which character’s best for romance in the end? Who should I choose as my final lover? Thank you.

Save option? Wyll.
Ranchy option? Halsin.
I can fix her? Shadowheart.
Character arc? Lae Zel
Best break up? Asterion kick in balls

Avoid Karlach like the plague, her ending options suck.

Evil despot? Minthara
You into explosives? Gale

Here are some that I've found:
Gale - If you keep him from blowing the orb, he will ask you to marry him in his final cut scene.
Asterion - Non-ascendant: very sweet romance options and shows true healing from his traumatic past. No marriage but he stays by your side as a lover/partner/equal. Ascendant: not so sweet, lol! Def not an equal partnership but he does "keep" you.
Halsin - Doesn't stay but looks forward to meeting again as lovers. Only choose Halsin if you can "bear" sharing!
Wyll - Very sweet marriage option but not much of a final ending scene.

What's your character alignment?

I vote for Astarion. His romance has two outcomes unlike the others. If you support his ascension then he becomes more powerful, more arrogant, and views your relationship more like a sub/dom dynamic with him as the dom. If you're a good character and still ascend him for whatever reason (maybe you don't want a bunch of hungry vampires roaming the streets), then his breakup is hilarious. If you read his thoughts you can see he views you as degrading yourself, which gives you a reason to kick him in the balls but be careful, he'll leave the camp after. However, if you're good and decide not to help him ascend, you can convince him see the errors of his ways and truly heal. There's an especially good scene at the end where he lets his past self go and all the baggage he has with Cazedor. He won't be Wyll, Gale, or Karlach levels of good, but he'll no longer be nihilistic and truly learn to let love in.

One option is really entertaining or a good choice for an evil character, the other is a proper closure to his story arc.

Another good one is Gale. As far as I know, him and Wyll are the only ones that ask you to marry them, but more importantly Gale is unique in that he doesn't care if you become a mind flayer. He'll still want to be with you. If that ain't true love I don't know what is.

As The Dark Urge, I am in a relationship with Gale's hand and it's great since you just cut out all the drama.

I thought the patch fixed Karlach's ending, but I'm only in Act 2. Are you talking about her pre-patch ending or post-patch one?

Thank you for replying. I'm playing as Shadowheart and as a good person. I don't care about gender. I just want to know who's the best lover story-wise.

They added no new content to the 2 endings Karlach has, they just fixed their triggers...

You have opened the can of worms again. The wriggling shall not cease until you close it again...

The entirety of your topic is subjective. Choose what makes sense for you, and if you can't choose on those merits, choose based on what makes sense for your character. They all have ups, and downs respectively. The companion writing, is by far some of the better writing in the game. You won't go wrong choosing Astarion, or Lae'zel or Gale, or Wyll - choose what feels right, for you, or for your character. In terms of canon choices... you're Gale's rebound. Lae'zel is too involved with her people. Astarion needs a friend. Wyll and Karlach need each other. Shadowheart needs a friend, but in a different way than Astarion. Minthara sadly has a lot of content that was both removed and cut from the release, and/or isn't working at the moment. Halsin isn't really a "relationship" kind of guy. Jaheira and Minsc are not options, and for good reason.

In my personal, and humble opinion, I don't think any of them NEED romance - a thing/fling here and there, sure. Full on relationship? Seems a bit much, and frankly, none of them are head and shoulders above one or the other.

If you want me to point out which companion may be the canon choice... my vote goes to Karlach for a non Dark Urge character. For the Dark Urge... Minthara. For any of the party with each other? I don't think any of them are a good fit romantically for any of each other. Not with how they are written at the very least. Good friends, at best.

TL:DR - There are no BEST options. Feel it out.

Why is Karlach the canon choice?

Lae'zel is best

How could you not say 'can of tentacles'?
Karlach just doesnt come close to the standard options, its easy to see she was added late. Wyll arguably gets a better story with her out of the picture.

They added no new content to the 2 endings Karlach has, they just fixed their triggers...

2 endings...? Karlach has like 5+ possible endings.

1: Karlach becomes a mindflayer and tries to live a new life as one.
2: Karlach goes boom on the dock and dies.
3: Karlach returns to Avernus with the player.
4: Karlach returns to Avernus with the Will.
5: Karlach returns to Avernus with Will AND the Player.

Karlach needs an optional "Go to City of Brass in the elemental plane of fire" ending option though, or a "replace Karlach's infernal engine heart with a true heart from a donor" option too.
