The one thing you cannot get away with in this particular encounter, and I learned this through a bit of trial and error, is using a certain malevolent flask containing a nasty surprise inside, or calling on a band of ogres you might have at your disposal - you cannot use either of these if you want to save the gnomes, as the ogres or the other option (without spoiling you - if you know, you know) will cause aggression in everything, turning all NPCs in the area temporarily hostile.
If you care nothing for the gnomes, this is a very convenient place to use your band of ogres and then proceed to betray them. As for your concern about not being able to kill the deurgar - do not worry, you can most certainly attack them and they will be happy to reciprocate your violence in kind.
Somewhat longer answer: You can, but attacking Thrinn will aggro all the dwarves prior to freeing Nere. So you'll lock yourself out of getting their help for the fight.
Longer answer: Giving Thrinn the Boots of Speed, and then talking to the dwarves about gutting Nere and getting payment, then successfully fulfilling the associated mini quest will net you not only a much easier fight, where you can kill the dwarves you sided with after the fact. Thus allowing you to play both sides, and coming out on top. If you Long Rest at all after having fought Nere and his goons, then, depending on your choices, the Gnomes and Dwarves will vanish to their associated fates. So it's a back to back fight, with easier to manage numbers. Fight smart, not hard.
Thanks for very detailed response, but I have to say that game isn't hard, I've yet to get a really challenging fight, yes I'm playing on tactician, and I am no Beaglerush but I am XCOM/2 veteran, so I would welcome a more challenging fight, (hopefully it becomes harder in act 2 or when I get to Grymforge or Creche), anyhow, it sounds like the way you suggested I handle things will net me more xp and I love me some xp.
Try going solo. Or pick one that you are going to romance and just the 2 of you go. That adds a lot to the game. This game is meant to be enjoyed. If it is the Challenge you are after you just have to slim down your party and stick to it.
FYI you can solo the Nere battle, it is one of the easiest to solo if you are set up right.
