My Shadowheart had this in my last playthrough. I just assumed it had something to do with either her personal story, or a specific item she was wearing. Wish I knew.

You both have this blue icon next to your portraits. Don't know what it is, but that's probably it.

It's a gear effect, she probably has a item that gives her a bonus while in shadows or obscured. The icon next to her portrait means that the effect is active which includes the smoke effect's visual que.

It's an effect that kicks in when your character is "obscured" check your chest piece or head piece on those characters.
