Also if you're frustrated just turn difficulty down to story for this one part. Unless you';re already playing that difficulty.
I appreciate your honesty.
Then I optimized for mobility and it was possibly the most satisfying encounter in the game.
Have:
- Longstrider pre-cast on arty, remember it's a ritual
- Dimension door, multiple
- Arcane Gate, so satisfying stepping from one side of the map to the other,
- Misty step, lots of
- Equipment that boost speed, almost everyone
- Haste, on key people, but don't lose concentration!
- Duke Ravengard open doors too, he's also got actions
- Omeleum cast 'Teleport to submarine' at least once, he can run down and do it again to save any one person within range on last turn. Bonus points if you loot his cell and/or he casts Teleport 3x.
- Sanctuary, put it on vulnerable prisoners and break it to cast again once they're in safer area
- Lightning and cold spells to quickly kill wet sahuagin which you must.
- Summoned creatures to interdict sahuagin.
Didn't do this, but try:
- Fog cloud/Darkness to break LoS so sahuagin can't shoot prisoners at range.
- Throwing Speed potions at distant prisoners, so they can make it. Bonus points for well placed Haste spores that prisoners naturally will run through.
So the general strategy is to send each of your party member to 4 direction. Some jail cell will took longer time as they have more defender. But speed potion or haste kind of a must have in this map.
My first try on Tactician I rescued all but one prisoner, my second try I got them all.
Or by that point make everyone upgrade their illithid powers to get Flight and layer Longstrider on it. It's one of the few fun events in the game because of it's time limit. You can't lollygag around like you can everywhere else. They really did a good job on that one with capturing the sense of tension trying to escape.
