Did I screw up romancing Shadowheart?
I kind of flirted with the idea of romancing Shadowheart, but ultimately decided to see how things played out. When I first mentioned any idea of romance with her, her response was "yes, let's go bone". I thought that was a bit rushed, so I said another time.
Then I met Karlach, and began flirting with her. Can't do anything until we fix her heart problem. Some time later I started learning more about Shadowheart through story and talking to her, but there's no option to pursue a romantic relationship. Did I softlock any romance with Shadowheart?

While i agree with your point, don´t forget that women cheat much more than men, and that a Shar´s workshipper is far too guilty on her own to judge anyone.

Still, yes, this game´s companions are so shallow that if you refuse them once, you lock them, and if you don´t, they sexually assault you at every chance.

no. you will get repeated chances to clarify who you want to be your main squeeze throughout the game. You will get asked questions by the game itself that are barely couched in game lingo even. If the game is confused over which person you want to be your actual romance, it definitely will let you know, at least once in each act.

that said, you can guarantee which companion has 100% romantic approval ratings for you via Cheat Engine. just google "BG3 Cheat Engine" to pull up the link to the table.

It is very hard too tell when in romance or it broken.

I gave up trying to figure it out with how much of a mess it is and all the constant changes needed and being done.

For me, biggest issue I had, like countless others with her, is that she refused the scene at party some reason yet was supposedly interested in me still seemingly though with no way to confirm or to confirm if that scene even needed in any way.

The messy coding makes it too hard too tell if she can even be romanced or not when "romancing" Laezel or if timing needs too be set in certain way because code looks at things at different times... since if you dismiss your fling with her just before the party Shadow triggers the scene and if you avoid having fun times with Laezel until after the party ie did shadow's scene that works perfectly fine as well...

? The companion literally tells you when it's broken if you double timing. Like if you romance lae'zel and shadowheart for example, if you duel and have fun with lae'zel in act 2, shadowheart will make it clear that romancing her is off the table now. Most also won't bother you anymore once you say no to them, except gale.

They'll tell you when you've won them over. With Shadowheart, that seems to happen at a specific moment during Act Two.

Those are when it is fully confirmed and locked in and lock out others nothing to do or confirm with anything I said and in fact just proves my point that game fails to let you know anything until it beyond to late (and technically not at all if you did not get it enough done to get that confirm to pop up).

Actual answers would be-

You could or can romance both until that point? somehow?

You may or may not need Shadow scene at party to play?

You need to play shadow scene at party 1st then lay with Lae and not other way around? +
or it does not matter and you just miss out on scene with shadow or a update changed it so xyz or ...

You just ask them how they feel about you and if they only see you as a friend they then say X but if have a crush on you then Y (as far as I know even Shadow will just say you the "likely bestest ever" rather she has crush on you or just the max elationship)

etc...

Know game not as complex as proper BG 2, where it was a royal pain to make sure you never missed anything with Jaheira (especially before mod/patches) but idk what it does or does not do in the background (also something BG2 easily allowed too check and mess with).

It all was very obvious and flowed naturally. Maybe you're just impatient.

you can also trigger the romance scene that can happen at the party at the end of act 1 early. if you hit every note correctly with her, it will happen long before the party. I think this probably confuses people. if you trigger it early, nothing will happen at the party with her. kinda surprised me there was no scene there, so I looked it up. if there are conflicts because you "accidentally" romanced someone like Karlach, the game will literally ask you who you want to dream about during that party scene, and after you finish going through Shar's temple with shadowheart in act 2, will again ask you to clarify who your primary romance is going to be with. with any/all of those potentially involved.
