It's just a pure damage class that's actually pretty tanky, but doesn't have much group utility. Barbarians kill ♥♥♥♥, and they're probably the best at it of any other pure class.
With Athletics and Mobility while sped up makes them insane killers.

Multi-classing is not a requirement, not for any class and every class is effective at something.
you get like 5 rages. and it lasts all combat. you wouldn't even do 5 combats and then long rest unless you plan on hoarding thousands of camp supplies for no reason.
Pure class vs pure class, the Barbarian is better in the early levels, but Fighter out scales the Barbarian hard and leaves them in the dust late game.
