I'm at the end of act 1, wondering if I should go through the underdark, or over through the mountain.
Is it possible to visit the underdark, kill all the dwarfs, then go back to the path through the mountain?

Yes this is possible. It doesnt matter really which way you enter I suppose. One is closer to one group of people, while another is closer to another. Both chains lead to the same place and same choices though so either way works

absolutely. so long as you don't take the elevator in the forge area to leave the underdark, you can completely double back and do all of the content for the surface entrance to act 3 as well. or vice versa. if you are playing a "good" character, I would recommend leaving via the underdark after doing all of the surface content up to the point of no return (the game will notify you). specifically, you can do all of the mosque controlled by gith area, then go back to the underdark and leave via the elevator in the duergar area.

UnderDark is better if you are playing as a good character, you can find the harpers from that route and they can lead you to the Inn. The mountain pass puts you at the spider guy and he will lead you to the Moon Tower.

I usually do the underdark completely then go back to travel the mountain path

I went through the Underdark on my first playthrough and will do the overland route on my second. I already know I'll be playing the game more than once so I want to save some content for later.

do the entire underdark, but DO NOT use the lift to chapter 2 (there will be a warning before using it) Instead travel back to the starter zone then take the githyanki/overland route. You will finish that and then go to act 2 at about level 7ish

you should open the underdark portion where the deep gnomes are, than fast travel to the bridge where you meet the giths, do everything you can in that area and then go back to the deep gnome area beat that spot and then travel to act 2 from that part since i feel that route is better you meet a group of people if you go the deep gnome route rather than the other route where you meet just a goblin

Complete both paths before you transition to act 2. If you're only doing one, do the mountain pass because the Blood of Lathander makes act 2 and 1/3 of the encounters in act 3 a cakewalk.

There is a way to Act 2 from the Grymforge. (leads to area near Goblin camp)

There are two ways to the Monastery where the Creche is (one near the goblin village and one near the Gith fight in Act 1). Then a way to Act 2 from that area. (heads towards the Inn)
