Its been stated that each writer at Larian will be writing atleast 1 origin character. At the time they said that they had, I think 11, writers, so we could be looking at anywhere between 10-13 Origin characters.
I'm sure we'll be getting more over time and Larian probably wants to deliver all popular races sooner or later - the question is how much time it takes.
When you have a 4 person party, most people tend to stick with 3 companions and the rest become more or less permanent subs - and a reminder on how artificial (yet needed not to bog down slow DnD5e combat too much) party limits really are.
In D:OS2 there were 6 companions, of which the half you didn't chose for your party would die. This way you avoided too much redundancy and also the artificial feel to swapping party on the fly. BG3 has 5 known companions for now, and they will likely add more. They are a bit light on martial and short-race characters, so a bearded female would kind of fill a trans woman intersectional quota set by WotC lol. That kind of representation would be welcome as I don't think I've ever seen a female dwarf in fantasy-dom; they all tend to be haggis-eating Scotsmen for some reason!
Pillars of eternity had a dwarven female hunter ( no beard :p )
Some wonder if there even are Dwarf women, perhaps Dwarfs just spring out of holes in the ground!
Of course, they’re so alike in voice and appearance they are often mistaken for dwarf men.
I've yet to see anything like that implemented but it sure would be cool.
DOS2 does actually do this, which is cool for that game, but I would rather they go the Dragon Age: Origins route, where whoever isn't in the party stays at camp (so long as you have recruited them at least once), and you can swap between them based on who you think would cover your weaknesses, or make for more interesting dialog encounters.
Dragon Age: Origins Awakening (DLC) had Sigrun
Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide had Dorna Trapspringer
My first playthrough will probably be as the wizard with a bomb in his chest, and my first task will be to make Shadowheart get a less ridiculous hairstyle.
I’ll be going drow or half drove because they included them in that same statement as well.
