Multiplayer: Does each player make their own individual character or do players use/control the unique companions?

Each player can make their own characters, correct.

The person who talks to and accepts companions into their party gets control of that companion, although companion control can be changed around at will.

Both.

Basically, each player creates a unique character, but then you get to recruit companions too.

It's like each real player has their own 'sub' party.

What if I want a 'dom' party?

But yeah, you each make your own but in final release you'll be able to start as most of the joinable companions if you'd prefer them too.
