Can anyone 2h?
I was thinking about a character that would 2h a sword/axe and cast spells. Not a cleric, but I thought maybe Warlock would be fun. Turns out you can't cast spells if you have a weapon on that you're not proficient with. Does DnD really restrict players like that these days?

It's a bit more complicated than that in actual play. In actual play you need a hand free in order to cast the somatic component of spells, which means unless you have a unique ability that lets you use your weapon as a casting focus, (obtained by Eldritch Knight fighters and War clerics, I think) you can't cast any spell with a somatic component and wield a two-handed weapon at the same time.

BG3 actually simplifies this a lot by only tying it to proficiency, since what components spells have isn't really something the game tracks.

Why would you want to wield a weapon you aren't proficient with?

Also fair point. Wait until level 4 and pick up weapon expert, then grab some two-handed weapon proficiency. Did that with my melee warlock.

or just pick a race with that proficency so your class isnt dependant on it

With a bit of multiclassing you can play in many ways and it will work. However you can't go full warlock and equip martial weapons let alone dual wielding them, there are ways to become proficent with the said weapons but again its gonna need some extra investment.

I'm confused, in BG3 as in 5e, you can't cast spells in armor you aren't proficient in. There's no loss of spell-casting when wielding a weapon you're not proficient with. Perhaps you have put on some gloves or boots that you're not proficient in and this is blocking your spell-casting?
There are multiple pathways to weapon proficiencies, including Dwarf.

For RP purposes. I wanted to use a 2H sword and be sort of like a battlemage type thing.

So find a way to get the proficiency - Dwarfs get it, a feat gives 4x weapon proficiencies, and later you'll be able to multiclass to get weapon profs.

The Warlock's Pact of the Blade might allow for this pretty easily depending on how they implement it in game.

You can use Githyanki for that, quite easily. The only drawback is that, well if you choose male, you'll look like the Grinch who stole Christmas.

Yeah that's what i'm doing now and my god is that the most pathetic looking character i've ever seen.

I'm trying to figure out the damage to sleeping targets now. 1d8+3 and I got a 5 and then a 6. If i rolled a 1 * 2 = 2 + 3 = 5... but 2 * 2 = 4+3 = 7?

I think they're using the same system to calculate damage as they did in DOS2. In which it rarely made sense.

It's almost happening every single time. I crit while they're asleep... when i can even get a hit on them because somehow every NPC in the game knows to immediately shove their sleeping comrades...

unless you're RPing the village idiot, it wouldn't make sense why you'd pick a weapon your character is not proficient in to RP with...

If you were an actual battlemage, one would hope you would be able to walk the walk and actually use the sword you so proudly brandish.

Feel free to multiclass into Fighter to grab those proficiencies when the game fully releases.
