Wizard might be a solid choice because the amount of spells they would have access to, I don't know what race you are playing but some of the racial bonuses gith get in the form of spells are quite useful, I have found some fun uses for them like free misty step not bad for mobility and getting into sneak positions.
picking companions to buff your chosen character? or 2?
While I totally dig creating a team that really focuses on a niche mechanic within a game, but having companions only existing to buff 1-2 characters will not work out as well just due to action economy.
Action Economy dictates that the more attacks/actions per mulitiple characters/enemies, will win out over More powerful less enemies with less actions. Just saying leaning on 1-2 characters to do all the heavy lifting doesn't add up well.
The goal could be buffing the rogue or twisting the mind on enemies, anything that could allow the rogue to help attain or to deal more damages to the target. Maybe I also forgot about some mechanics which could help rogue.
Thanks for your propositions, I will look into wizard and warlock, and hopefully they release the other wizard subclasses.
@KeepCleaving, no the objective is not to have 2 characters existing only to buff the rogue. It is more to have a party where in some cases I could use the potential of 1 character or 2 to help rogue in special situations. I understand that it is not viable to have all the fights carried out with the rogue trying to sneak in and kill the enemies. I agree with the action economy.
clerics have buffs for rogues and can be tanky. pallys are tanky and can debuff enemies for the rogue's pleasure. drows gain access to faerie fire which is also a sneak attack enabler. the wizard is just there to buff the rogue with more movement speed etc and throw cc at enemies so they can be reached and hit easier
