Is Larian seriously forcing us to give our personal phone to Discord?

I tried to join their Discord but couldn't post without giving my private personal info.
I've been on Discord for at least 3 years but no way do I trust them with private info.

It seems insane to give out personal info to a for-profit 3rd party data company.
Who can at anytime change their policies about giving out personal info.
People who wonder why they get so much spam and harassing phone calls?

Does Larian not know the danger, or the potential exposure for their customers.

I just joined their discord to test this out, and at no point was prompted for a phone number. Are you sure you're not joining some random copycat server?

Thanks for your reply. Near certain, there was only two Baldur's Gate 3 Discord
choices I saw, official and Fextralife. I'll double check again and hope I am wrong.

I don't think there's an official BG3 Discord, the Larian discord just has a BG3 section. If the discord you were joining isn't the one above, then I think it's some rando discord selling your info.

Yes, Larian's Discord does indeed require one's phone number. First discord server I've joined so far that required it. Due to the almost certainty of data breaches in this day and age, it's never a welcome thing.

Okay, so I double-checked my Discord profile, and I already have a verified phone number associated with my profile. Maybe that's the issue?

So, Larian isn't directly asking for the phone number, they just want you to have a verified Discord account? That's not something I'd considered, but it makes sense to avoid trolls and spammers for a company discord, off the top of my head. I guess that's not standard?

Yeah, that's the case. I have a verified Discord account.

Well I guess we can respectfully disagree but I don't think using 'Protecting Their',
while jeopardizing 'Our' personal data from 'trolls and spammers' is mutually
equivalent.

All these other Discords (well 90%+) keep out spammers and trolls with moderaters.
Which Larain can afford, hell most people/fans would probably do it for free.

So, no disrespect intended but that's a false equivalency!

So the Larian Discord requires a verified Discord account to chat, but not to read, but it isn't Larian getting your deets.

I suppose it would depend on the size of the company's discord? Are the other discords you're in associated with large gaming studios?

An individual troll can be readily banned, but a concerted attack with bots would be pretty devastating, I'd imagine. It's not like medium-size companies don't get DDOSed or otherwise harassed by folks with some technical know-how. I'm not sure what the standard is for company-specific discord servers, I don't often use them.

Yeah, I don't really see an indication that the Discord servers I join are gaining personal information off of my account info, but I'd be interested to hear if that's a common practice on the platform. I typically only use Discord for private purposes, I don't use it as a "social media", so I'm not sure what the standards are.

It's been a while since I verified my account, but I'm pretty sure the whole idea of the verified account is that a confirmation code gets sent to the phone number submitted, right? That's the "verification" in question.
