I once rolled 12 12 11 11 7 7 and played a normal human with it. (shadow sorc / moon druid / life cleric)
They’re def not completely broken.
They’re one of the better races for table top, but are on par with others like Half Elf. The free feat makes them good for a lot of builds that need particular feats. I wouldn’t call them broken though.
Additionally, they’re definitely LESS powerful for BG3 than for table top, because of the prevalence of darkness and heightened need for dark vision.
Variant human is my #1 want for the game, also - OP.
If we get it, my first character will be Variant Human Paladin with something cool like Polearm Mastery.
However, when making an adventurer in D&D, we as gamers tend to optimize our builds and there's always a race that can do something better than any human can, even if they are poor at other things humans are also good at. That doesn't matter when in a party though so in reality there really isn't any reason to play humans that another race just isn't better at for whatever class you want to play as.
I hope Larian adds variant human as well. That gives an actual reason to play humans and gives them a unique advantage over every other race in their own way.
Shield Dwarves make superb Fighters and Barbs, Gold Dwarves are fine Clerics, Drow make nice Thieves and decent Sorcerors, Githyanki and Gnomes are rock soilid wizards, Halflings are perfectly good Rangers and Sorcerors and Strongheart Halflings make good Warlocks.............and this barely scratches the surface.
Really its all down to you to make characters with different races, like a Githyanki wizard who can wear armour. While you may be close to min-maxing with half-elves, you can make good characters from all the other races...........I'd have thought you would have become bored playing a half elf all the time.
As for variant human, I look forward to it the same as I look forward to the Half Orc, Dragonborn, Monk Class, rolling your own stats, more subclasses, held actions and many more things.
