where to find a shovel in the beginning?
i keep coming across these mounds where you can dig but have no shovel, where can i find one?

I found a Shovel in the secret lab underneath the Blighted Village.

There's one in the path to Sylvanu's grove, the left path, stuck in a mound.

Also, if you kill the pillager's at the Overgrown Ruins (to the right once you get Lae'zel) one of them carry a shovel.

If you reach Sylvan's grove before finding any of those, just buy one, they are dirt cheap.

Buy one from who? I checked the merchants there and nobody had one.

Didn't they? Strange, it's been a long time since I bought one, maybe try long resting and check if they renewed their stocks. I'll check in some of my save games if I can see who sells them in Sylvanu's grove.

Ya, hopefully one-of-the-merchants has one shuffle into their stock periodically.
They are literally in a couple of places on the map if you are exploring, you really don't need to buy one. Google is your friend.
