It's only going to be a thing in the PHB that comes out next year for D&D 5E, not to be confused with D&D 5E that came out in 2014, which BG3 is based off of.
No, half-races weren't removed. Half Elves and Half Orcs aren't going to be published race options in the OneDnD PHB next year. All half-race combinations are entirely in the game, on the table, and legal to use.
Please be aware that it is popular and profitable for unscrupulous internet journalists to blow stuff like this far wider than is appropriate, and feel free to actually read the information released by WotC instead of watching youtube commentators extrapolating and presenting their own opinions as factual.
People need to stop buying into the rage-bait misinformation campaign.
It's the new "Disney insiders leak removal of Brie Larson from the MCU".
If it gets clicks, who cares if it's real?
Yeah, only by technicality. Mechanically you pick one parent race, and that is the race you play as, that is what the mechanics are based on. You essentially get to say "Oh, I know I am PLAYING a half elf, but um. I guess...I'll play a human with pointy ears. And all human traits. Since the game doesn't give me options."
That is their "choice." It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid.
Half-Elves and Half-Orcs aren't going anywhere. They're still in the game, they're still on DnD Beyond. They're just not getting published in the new PHB next year.
Neither are Artificers, but nobody is crying about "WotC removing Artificers".
All mechanics for being a half-race is being removed though, so there is no difference between being a half-whatever and a full whatever.
- Jeremy Crawford at the D&D content creator summit.
The 2014 PHB, yes, the 2024 PHB's character creator works like this, you choose ANY two races to be your parent, choose one to have your racial mechanics coming from, and the appearance of the other.....and that's it.
The upcoming PHB's character creator is removing all mechanics for what makes a half-race a half-race.
They say that the 2014 PHB characters can still work with the new system coming out, but we'll have to wait and see if that is true and not just the corporation saying what they think the customers want to hear.
We'll just have to wait and see.
As it stands right now, WotC is not getting the benefit of the doubt from me. They've made too many questionable decisions with outright stated reasons for the WHY they are making them I find to be outright stupid.
They'd be a lot better off if they would just stop talking, create the rules and the tools for players to make their games with and then back off.
