Do I misunderstand Wild Shape?
My Druid is straight up dying out of Wild Shape a LOT. I was under the impression that if excess damage in Wild Shape to you to 0 HP in your normal form, it'd be like falling any other way. Does it kill you outright?

In other words... I had 8 health when I took Wild Shape. My Wild Shape, at 9 health, took around 20 damage. I reverted to my natural form dead, no chance to make saving throws.

it should just carry over, ie 10hp bear takes 13dmg, nonshifted druid takes 3

Unless you were on the verge of dying before you entered Wild Shape, that should not happen. Your normal shape and Wild Shape have separate health pools.

The way it's supposed to work is let's say your Wild Shape has 5 hit points left, you take 10 points of damage from a hit, 5 takes your Wild Shape to 0 and the other 5 goes over to your normal form.

Haven't tested Druids in the game, so I'm not sure what's happening with them, and you could maybe try clarifying your post a little. It's slightly confusing.

What happened here is I had 8 health, went into Wild Shape. At one point Wild Shape had 9 health and took something like 20 damage. I reverted to my natural form completely dead.

Ok, so everything worked as it should

You just took so much damage that it took out your WIld Shape HP and enough carried over to take out your normal form too.

If in that case you had taken less than 17 damage, you would've stayed alive.

Not a bug.

It's exactly what should happen in that case, you just need to understand the rules.

17 -20 = unconscious not dead dead... right?

i mean he said completely dead, that's potentially not right.

Ok, OP did edit his post to clarify.

That indeed shouldn't happen, AFAIK.

I encountered this a few times in my playthrough too, particularly early - instead of reverting to human form I'd just die when brought to 0 in my animal forms. I wonder if it's the massive damage rules being applied a little too aggressively. At least in tabletop 5e, if you're brought to 0 hp with extra damage equal to or greater than your max hp total, you instantly die. In other words:

-You have 10 max hp.
-You're currently at 1 hp.
-You're dealt 12 damage in a single hit.
-Because this would reduce you -10 hp or less, you're instantly killed instead of going to 0 and starting to roll death saves.

I don't know if this rule is actually in BG3, but if it was applying to animal forms and checking their max hp or something like that, it would explain why I saw the same thing of instantly being knocked from my animal form to dead early game but not later (when my animal forms had more hp), rather than the damage rolling to my main form as it should. Or maybe it was checking my main form's max hp, but not factoring in the current hp I still had in my base form.

I've had the same problem.. and even further I had a druid in wolf form with max hp 35(ish), current 4 hp.. druid started full hp hit for 8 and now has 65/84. As well as another time was low hp druid and got hit for over spill dmg that would have legit brought druid to less than 0 but insta dead no death saves just dead.. wild shape is useless with these bugs/not as intended.

My guy, if you are an druid and you arent on Spore way, im sad to say that you are doing it wrong. Spore druid is so powerfull that make all other options be just there to give a false sense of choice.

Unless you cross-class or heaven forbid, are adding flavor to a build
