*spoilers* Gave a thief 300 gold, ended up learning the entire plot of the bad guys.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So, I was at Wyrm's Rock fortress, and decided to check out the Fist barracks. 3 guards were asleep, but one was suspiciously meddling with a chest that wasn't his. I interrupted him, an it turns out he was a thief, trying to go home instead of playing soldier. So, I surprised him by giving him 300 so he could bail. He tells me he left his stash on the roof. Now, up until this point, I had not even considered trying to get to the roof of this place, but now motivated by chasing minor loot, I found a way by following the trail BEHIND the castle all the way around to the back, and climbed up some vines to a balcony that was on the heavily protected roof. Well, I wasn't planning on fighting anything, so just cast greater invisibility, entered the area, went right, following the marker the thief put on my map.... and low and behold the entrance to the Archdukes chambers was right there! I walked right on in, and every single plot in the entire game is laid out on the main table and in the alcoves. if you read, and even take ALL of it... the game does not respond in any way. does not update anything in your own journal. but now you know the entire story. just the details are left to you. seemed a bit... odd frankly. Hopefully this doesn't break anything. there are also two ornate chests with some very rare loot in them. especially the one by the bed. walked right back out before invisibility ended, and fast travelled to nearest waypoint.

so... from the humblest of sideplots, now I know everything. intended? *shrug*

you pretty much already know the whole story by the end of act 2 anyway, the badguys are controlling jimmy neutrons brain to conquer the world. I'm not sure what could've been spoiled, unless you somehow missed the end of act 2 where they very explicitly control an elder brain with magic gems and talk about sending an army to attack baldurs gate so gortash can play the hero.

Maybe there's some revelations up there if you're the dark urge I guess?

I just reached Gortash's Coronation and rather than go right into the event, I went exploring to the same rooftop area you went to. I did not use invisibility and got caught by a Steel Watcher which turned into about 8 Steel Watchers and a bunch of other hostile NPCs. I tried to whack down the first one to see how the fight might progress and hit quickload shortly thereafter. Think I will go back now for the invisibility route.

Isn't it funny how bad guys always write down (or tell the hero directly) their whole plans?

Like in Bond films where they give a bit exposition to Bond about their plans, right before Bond escapes to foil the plans.

Pro tip for bad guys: Never write down your plans!
When your plan involves an entire region in Faerun, its best you write it down.

lol. *ding*

yeah, those things are pretty tough. there are special grenades that can disable them for 2 turns. combine that with the only thing they aren't resistant to: cold, and you can *maybe* take out one or two by yourself. but 8? even a full team would take a few dings there.
